How to Clean Your Specs… The Right Way
Properly cleaning your spectacle lenses is key to maintaining clear vision, extending the lifespan of your eyewear, and avoiding scratches or other damage. But there’s a right way and plenty of wrong ways when it comes to cleaning your eyewear.
Step-by-Step: Cleaning Your Spectacle Lenses at home
- Wash your hands thoroughly – Use soap and water to remove oils and dirt before handling your glasses.
- Rinse your lenses under tepid running water – ensure the water is tepid; hot water could damage the coating and warp the frame.
- Dry with a clean, lint-free microfibre cloth.
- Be gentle! Coatings and special finishes need care – a bit of TLC.
Step-by-Step: Cleaning Your Spectacle Lenses on the go
- Try to have clean hands before touching your specs to reduce further dirt and grease.
- Use a non-alcohol-based specs spray cleaner to remove as much dirt, grime and dust as possible.
- Dry with a clean, lint-free microfibre cloth.
- Remember, gently does it.
Don’t…
- Don’t use paper towels, tissues, or your clothing to clean lenses – they can scratch the surface.
- Don’t use household cleaners (like washing up liquid, window or surface sprays), bleach, or vinegar – these can damage lens coatings.
- Don’t leave your glasses unprotected in bags or pockets.
Extra Tips
