Clearer Vision for the Road Ahead

As the days grow shorter and darkness falls earlier, many drivers find themselves tackling roads in far trickier conditions. Eye sensitivity changes dramatically between daylight and nighttime, and that shift can make even the most familiar route feel a little less comfortable.

Night driving brings its own set of challenges:

🌙 Reduced visibility
💡 Increased glare from oncoming headlights
👀 Eye strain from constantly adjusting to low light

If you’ve ever found yourself squinting through the glare or blinking away dazzle, you’ll know how tiring it can be.

The good news?

There are lenses designed specifically to make night driving clearer, safer, and a whole lot more comfortable.
Below, we explore some of the best options available to help you see better after dark.

Varilux Road Pilot Driving Lenses

Essilor’s Road Pilot™ varifocal lenses are designed with drivers in mind.

✅ Reduced glare by up to 90% thanks to the Crizal Drive anti-reflective coating
✅ Optimised field of vision for driving — sharp focus where you need it most
✅ Enhanced clarity and contrast in low light

Unlike most varifocals, Road Pilot lenses are custom-designed for you — tailored to your individual eye movements for a more natural gaze and wider visual fields. There’s no odd tint or shiny coating, just crystal-clear vision and less glare.

Road Pilot lenses include Crizal Drive coating as standard.

Eyezen Lenses with Crizal Drive Coating

If you don’t need varifocals, Essilor’s Eyezen lenses could be your perfect partner on the road (and at your desk).

They’re designed to reduce eye strain caused by modern life — think digital screens, constant refocusing, and pixel-heavy text. When paired with Crizal Drive coating, Eyezen lenses become a brilliant choice for drivers who want sharper, more comfortable vision day and night.

Crizal Drive makes night driving up to 90% clearer than with standard lenses, and also offers:

✅ Scratch and smudge resistance
✅ Dust repellence
✅ Long-lasting clarity

Drivesense Lenses

At night, our eyes naturally become slightly more short-sighted (a condition known as night myopia), which can cause blur and strain. Drivesense lenses are designed to combat this effect, helping reduce glare and improve overall clarity.

They feature:

✅ Freeform lens – personalised to suit you
✅ Honeycomb anti-reflection coating, which helps sharpen your vision and reduce fatigue during longer journeys
✅ Night vision zone, to give reduced fatigue when driving at night

Drivesense Lenses are supplied by UK lens suppliers,  Jai Kudo. They are available with single vision or varifocal lenses.

Yellow Tinted Night Lenses

For those who are looking for a low cost way to reduce glare at night, yellow tinted lenses are a simple but effective solution.

At Speccies, our yellow tinted lenses are made from the same high-quality material as prescription lenses — not the cheap plastic “over-specs” you’ll find online.

They:

Filter out harsh blue light
Reduce the intense brightness of oncoming headlights
Offer excellent optical quality
Have a yellow tint of 15-20% intensity – the legal maximum allowable

⚠️ The downside? They’re permanently tinted yellow — which might look a bit unusual!

👀 If you have an ECO frame, we can also provide a magnetic sunclip with yellow tinted lenses. They are made with the same high-quality material as our regular yellow tinted lenses. Keep them in the car and simply attach when you need them.

We don’t recommend the plastic “over-specs” off-the-shelf versions advertised on social media or in magazines — they’re often made from low-grade polarised plastic and won’t perform nearly as well. Crucially, the tint intensity may exceed the legal maximum.

Blue Shield Coating

While not specifically designed for driving, Blue Shield coatings can soften harsh white lights by giving them a slightly warmer hue. They’re more suited for reducing digital eye strain from screens, but some drivers find them helpful at night.

Be aware: the lenses have a noticeable blue reflection, which some wearers find distracting, and the glare reduction isn’t as strong as other options discussed in this article.

Blue Shield coating is included in our varifocals from Entry to Superior ranges, or available as an optional upgrade on single vision lenses.

The Road Ahead

If you find night driving uncomfortable, you’re far from alone — but you don’t have to settle for squinting and straining.

From high-performance Varilux Road Pilot lenses to simple yellow tints, there’s a solution for every driver and every budget.

Clearer vision means safer, more confident driving — whatever the road (or weather) throws your way.
